OnePlus 7 and 7 Pro are here: Everything you need to know

Here's everything you need to know about the OnePlus 7 series.

What happens when the smartphone company known for making flagship killers makes a premium flagship of its very own? The answer is the OnePlus 7 Pro.

In addition to the grand unveiling of its first ever “ultra-premium” phone, OnePlus has also introduced the OnePlus 7 — a more direct follow up to last year’s OnePlus 6T.

This is the first time the beloved Shenzhen brand has launched two phones at once and you can technically take that tally to three if you count the 5G version of the OnePlus 7 Pro. Does this new strategy still deliver on OnePlus’ “Never Settle” promise?

Here’s everything you need to know about the OnePlus 7 Pro and OnePlus 7.

Our verdict: OnePlus 7 Pro review: Different fundamentals

OnePlus 7 Pro: Refreshing design

OnePlus 7 Pro screen in front of fire

The OnePlus 7 Pro has the largest display on a OnePlus phone to date, coming in at a mighty 6.67-inches and sporting a curved edge design not unlike the Samsung Galaxy S10 Plus.

OnePlus calls this a “Fluid AMOLED” display. What that means is you’re getting a Quad HD+ screen with a 3,120 x 1,440 resolution (516ppi), HDR 10+ support, and a 19.5:9 aspect ratio, all bundled into an almost completely bezel-less package. The “Fluid” part of the moniker refers specifically to the display’s 90Hz refresh rate for a smoother, snappier feel.

The OnePlus 7 Pro's “Fluid AMOLED” display ditches the notch.

After two years of phones with notches, the OnePlus 7 Pro finally ditches the controversial cutout. Instead, OnePlus has followed the lead of its BBK stablemates OPPO and vivo by installing a pop-up selfie camera which rises out of the top of the phone.

The OnePlus 7 Pro comes in three colors — Nebula Blue, Mirror Grey, and Almond, with the latter releasing after the initial launch. All three colors have a shimmer effect on the rear glass which falls somewhere between Samsung’s S10 series and the HUAWEI P30 range. For those that want added protection, OnePlus has confirmed that official nylon and sandstone cases that accommodate the pop-up camera will be available from launch.

OnePlus 7 Pro: Three cameras, three times the fun?

It’s fair to say that for all OnePlus’ bluster around its “Never Settle” mantra, buying a OnePlus phone has always meant sacrificing on the camera compared to some of its more expensive rivals. That all changes with the OnePlus 7 Pro, at least in terms of raw hardware.

The OnePlus 7 Pro is outfitted with a triple-lens rear shooter. The main camera sensor is the 48MP Sony IMX586 sensor that’s become ubiquitous in the smartphone sector in the past few months. The sensor is 34.8 percent larger than the one found on the OnePlus 6T, has an f/1.6 aperture for improved low light performance, and OIS and EIS.

The bottom sensor is an 8MP telephoto lens with an f/2.4 aperture and OIS that supports up to 3x optical zoom. The phone also supports up to 10x digital zoom. Finally, the top sensor is a 16MP ultra wide angle camera with a 117 degree field-of-view and f/2.2 aperture.

This is OnePlus' most versatile camera phone to date.

OnePlus says this is its biggest leap yet in the photography department thanks to faster processing, pixel binning technology, and an improved Nightscape mode. The OnePlus 7 Pro also debuts the UltraShot engine which automatically filters HDR and scene recognition data through OnePlus’ custom imaging algorithms.

DxOMark has already awarded the camera a rating of 111, which is the highest of any OnePlus smartphone to date and sits just behind the Samsung Galaxy S10 5G and HUAWEI P30 Pro that both received a 112 rating. Android Authority’s camera testers haven’t been quite as enthusiastic — watch the video above to hear why — but the OnePlus 7 Pro still has a much stronger camera package than its predecessors.

The mechanized pop-up selfie camera is a 16MP Sony IMX471 shooter with EIS and an f/2.0 aperture. The mechanism itself takes just 0.53 seconds to pop out and is protected by a silicon sealant to stop dust and water seeping in.

There are always durability concerns with any moving parts on smartphones, especially those that are mechanized, but OnePlus says the elevation has been tested over 300,000 times with no degradation and will automatically retract if the phone is dropped.

OnePlus 7 Pro: Premium power

With the OnePlus 7 Pro, the Chinese OEM has clearly made an extra effort to improve on areas in which its phones have traditionally lagged behind. However one area that OnePlus phones have always excelled at is performance, and the OnePlus 7 Pro is yet another powerhouse phone from the brand.

The OnePlus 7 Pro is powered by Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 855 SoC, which we already know is a significant step up from the Snapdragon 845 found in the OnePlus 6T and OnePlus 6.

Elsewhere, the OnePlus 7 Pro packs 6GB RAM and 128GB non-expandable storage as standard. This can be increased to 8GB RAM and 256GB or, if you really think you might need it (you won’t), you can opt for a whopping 12GB RAM/256GB storage exclusively with the Nebula Blue model.

With the Snapdragon 855 and up to 12GB of RAM in tow, the OnePlus 7 Pro is already an absolute beast, but it doesn’t stop there. OnePlus has also beaten Samsung to the punch by bringing UFS 3.0 support to the OnePlus 7 Pro. This super-fast storage offers much higher data transfer speeds and should help larger, memory-intensive apps load much faster.

The OnePlus 7 Pro has a 4,000mAh battery which you’ll be able to charge quickly due to the Warp Charge 30 technology that makes it over from the OnePlus 6T McLaren Edition. There’s still no wireless charging support, but OnePlus continues to be adamant that faster wired charging has more benefit to the end user.

This is yet another powerhouse phone from OnePlus.

The optical fingerprint sensor has seen a lot of upgrades since the OnePlus 6T. The new sensor – once again made by Goodix — is 36 percent larger compared to the 6T’s reader, and takes just 0.21 seconds to unlock. Face unlock has also seen improvements despite the shift to a pop-up selfie camera. OnePlus says the software-based face unlock takes 0.65 seconds to unlock, including the pop-up duration.

One final hardware upgrade comes with the aforementioned stereo speaker pairing which supports Dolby Atmos for mobile.

Things are slightly more muted when it comes to software changes, but OxygenOS does enjoy a few new perks to celebrate the OnePlus 7 Pro launch.

New features include Night Mode 2.0 which takes the display brightness down to as low as 0.27 nits, screen recording for capturing on-screen video, audio, and external sound via the microphone, and Zen Mode which disables everything on the phone except emergency calls and photos to give you some down time from your phone.

The remaining hardware and software tweaks are reserved for gaming performance. A larger vibration motor for improved haptic feedback, a 10-layer liquid cooling system, and a gaming mode will be enough for most mobile gamers, but the OnePlus 7 Pro takes things further with RAM Boost, which re-allocates RAM to more memory-intensive applications, and Fnatic Mode — a more intensive power optimization mode on top of regular gaming mode named after the British esports organization.

OnePlus 7 Pro notification shade

As impressive as the OnePlus 7 Pro is as a no-holds-barred OnePlus flagship, there are some areas where some of the more traditional smartphone stalwarts maintain a lead.

OnePlus has been unashamedly vocal about the OnePlus 7 Pro’s lack of an IP rating, all-but-stating that the certification is a waste of time that adds unnecessary costs which would inevitably be passed on to the consumer. OnePlus has noted that the 7 Pro is sealed to protect against water damage, but that doesn’t change the fact that the OnePlus 7 Pro has no official waterproofing rating.

As well as the lack of wireless charging, the OnePlus 7 Pro still inexplicably doesn’t have always-on display support, and has no 3.5mm headphone jack — even as others are bringing it back. There’s no headphone adapter either.

OnePlus 7: 6T evolved

The excitement over an ultra-premium flagship from OnePlus will inevitably grab all the headlines, but we shouldn’t forget about the regular OnePlus 7.

At a glance, it’d be easy to mistake the OnePlus 7 for the OnePlus 6T as it has an incredibly similar design, right down to the returning waterdrop notch. In fact, this feeling of familiarity persists throughout the OnePlus 7 as the display, battery size, and overall dimensions are almost identical.

There are a few notable upgrades over its predecessor, however. The OnePlus 7 gets an upgrade to the Snapdragon 855 SoC and has the same 48MP primary camera as the OnePlus 7 Pro, though the latter is only joined by a basic 5MP secondary depth sensor.

The Dolby Atmos stereo speakers also make their way over from the Pro variant, as does UFS 3.0, RAM Boost, Zen Mode, and all the gaming mode extras.

OnePlus 7 Pro and OnePlus 7 price and availability

The OnePlus 7 Pro pricing starts at $669 for the entry model with 6GB RAM and 128GB storage and maxes out at $749 for the 12GB RAM/256GB storage variant. In Europe, the OnePlus 7 Pro starts at 709 euros, or 649 pounds in the U.K., and pricing in India starts at 48,999 rupees.

The OnePlus 7 will be available to buy in June with options of 6GB or 8GB of RAM and 128GB/256GB storage. Pricing starts at 559 euros/499 pounds/32,999 rupees. It will only come in Mirror Gray in Europe, whereas China and India luck out with a red colorway.

You might have noticed that I haven’t mentioned U.S. availability for the regular OnePlus 7. That’s because OnePlus has no plans on bringing the vanilla OnePlus 7 to North America.

Even with the welcome price drops to the OnePlus 6T, there’s sure to be many OnePlus fans in the U.S. that will be angered by the move as despite the obvious similarities, the OnePlus 7’s upgraded SoC, UFS 3.0, and improved camera are notable upgrades.
