If you like the book, you will hate this movie. It makes no attempt to be even sort of faithful. Every character is completely different from how they are in the book, for most characters both in ethnicity and personality. For instance, in the book Charles Wallace is quiet and reserved. In this train wreck of a film, he shouts at everybody. Even on it's own merit this movie fails. I knew the plot of the book pretty well, but I could not tell what was going on half the time in this movie. They spent too much money on special effects and celebrities and not enough on making the movie make sense.

First: I've loved this book since I was a kid, so my expectations were probably a little too high. Second: I think the MAIN THING that most of the reviewers here are not picking up on is that the target audience was 8-14 year olds. If you are not 8-14, you might not enjoy this! Fair warning! Third: I loved the casting. I'd give it 3 stars for that alone. Last: No, it doesn't have the nuances and the depth that the book does. No, I didn't like all of the visual choices that were made, but I didn't hate all of them, either. They took a risk. They were creative. They brought some new angles to an older story, and that was okay with me. I didn't hate it. And the book will always be there for me (as I own multiple copies). I hope some young girls discover this series and Madeleine's writings because of it.

No character development, no explanation, no resolution. Love was the answer all along. I'll call you without getting your number. 4 years passes but your beard doesn't grow. Flying lettuce creature. Pretty sure there is a Family Guy quote in there. One of the main characters just shows up and says "I'll join you," and the movie moves forward without any backstory or anything. No purpose in this movie. But hey, there's Oprah!
