“Burn your fat with me!!” is the first in a series moévation fitness apps from Japanese indie developer Creative Freaks. The Japanese version, “Nensho!”, has reached over 100,000 downloads and has gained recognition among the otaku community for being the first moé-themed app to break into the iTunes Top 10 ranking and have a fully localized release.

How does it work?

At its core, “Burn your fat with me!!” is a Japanese visual novel game akin to the “Phoenix Wright” or “Professor Layton” series. But instead of building a case or solving puzzles, the player advances the story by clearing fitness goals, such as performing 50 sit-ups in three minutes.

The story revolves around the player’s relationship with childhood friend Mayu Uehara and is divided into 20 fully-voiced episodes*. Players train in real life by doing sit-ups, push-ups**, and squats with their iOS device while Mayu counts their repetitions and cheers them on. As the story advances, you become closer with Mayu but your fitness goals also become more demanding. Clearing the story may take several months of training, but stick with it and you’ll have something to show for in the real world as well!

*Base game includes story episodes 1–8 only. Additional episodes can be unlocked with purchased in-game.
**Episodes 1–11 use the sit-up function exclusively. Episodes using the push-ups and squat function can be unlocked with purchased in-game, after completing episode 8.

• Training Mode: It’s important to train regularly if you want to be able to clear some of the more difficult trials. In Training Mode you choose your exercise, target reps, and time limit, then train while Mayu counts your repetitions and cheers you on. Using Training Mode (Timed only) will also earn you Moévation Points which can be used to unlock bonus content like new episodes.

I love this game, it's a good motivation tool to get people exercising who usually don't. But I do have some grunts about it. I took "nutrition" in high school, & watched documentaries about it; you can't lose weight just by exercising. The main vein of weight loss is diet, mostly limiting your calorie intake. It would be nice to see a system like that implemented, even something as simple as a calorie counter, or "Remember to eat something green today!". As well as some graphical updates.

So I really enjoy this app, however I wish there was something in the app that would exemp you from doing a specific exercise. Now I say this because although I'm quite young I've got knee issues that limit me from doing the squats. Now I know I could just skip the exercise altogethed but it would be nice to have this function added in so that it doesnt affect your overall results.

Hella great! There's a lot of stuff to improve (Like the motion tracker with squats being a main issue) but you can always just hold your phone and tap away if that's a bother. I like the idea of this and it really helps you be consistent at it (Which is the most important part of working out). My only major gripe with this is that the alarm sometimes doesn't trigger on the scheduled time but I'm guessing it's because I closed the application in the BG accidentally. It's solid regardless. 5/5!
