UPDATE (3/22/24) The new Google Chat is AWESOME! Thanks for making the necessary changes Google! Original Review: It's so close but has one fatal flaw. It doesn't allow you to delete or edit entries like slack, Whatsapp, and Microsoft teams do. That's a major, major miss and prevents me from using this as my primary cross platform communication tool with friends and family. To make matters worse, I think it's a business decision because I understand the corporate version has this feature.

Workable but still not as good as it should be. When a new message comes in while responding via notification, the input box and keyboard disappear causing a lot of accidentally tapped notifications. There are no read receipts in group chat. A huge disappointment that there is no scheduled send feature. The new home page bar shouldn't be floating (this one might actually be implemented better then most, but I can't understand why anyone thinks floating buttons that obstruct content are good).

Undesired invitations remain in grey. They cannot be deleted. I never with Not very functional. Images cannot be copied and pasted in later conversations. When I engage in a conversation only the very last message from the person I am texting displays. All others disappear. But my own messages remain as I have history turned on. The other person is pinned as they are the only person I text with. Needs more work before replacing hangouts. I do not want the app to access my calendar or contacts.
